Santa Claus will arrive early at the Milan Public Library this year.

Library cardholders will have the opportunity to visit a long list of museums and art institutes for free.

The program, called the "Museum Adventure Pass" is being offered at the Milan and Monroe libraries for the first time, said Susan Wess, Milan library director.

"We're delighted to be able to offer this service, especially in these hard economic times," she said.

The two-year-old program, sponsored by Macy's, Detroit regional public libraries -- through the Library of Michigan Foundation -- and the Cultural Alliance of Southeastern Michigan, provides free access to a number of local arts and cultural organizations.

Wess said this is the first year the Milan Public Library has participated, and the passes will be available Oct. 27.

"I think people will really like it, and this gives them an opportunity to go to museums and art institutes that they normally wouldn't spend the money to visit," she said.

The free museum pass program is a partnership between Macy's department store, and 179 metro area libraries and 28 local arts and cultural organizations.

"Macy's is thrilled with the local community's response to the Museum Adventure Pass program and we're pleased to continue our support," said Mike Dervos, senior vice president and director of stores for Macy's east-north region.

"The success of the Museum Adventure Pass proves there is a strong desire for education and access to our wonderful local arts and culture scene," he said.

Maud Lyon, founding director of the Cultural Alliance of Southeastern Michigan said, "Museum Adventure Pass is a truly innovative approach to introduce residents to our region to museums of science, history and culture, and art."

Wess said she tried to participate last year, but was unsuccessful.

"We had a lot of people request it, so I'm excited to see the response," she said.

Library users with a valid library card can check out a Museum Adventure Pass and receive a museum admission pass.

The pass is handed in at the box office of the participating organization for free admission for two or four people.

Each Museum Adventure Pass expires within one week from the date of checkout.

For more information, call the library at 439-1240 or visit www.milanlibrary.org.

For participating museums, visit the Web site www.detroitadventurepass.org.
