Jeremy Nieman said his 10-week stint as the interim police chief in Milan will make him a better sergeant.

Nieman, 31, assumed the position while Chief Jeffrey Lewis attended the prestigious FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va., earlier this month.
Lewis was among just five law enforcement officials from Michigan to be selected.
Nieman was presented a certificate of appreciation Monday night from the Milan City Council for his "steadfast dedication to the City of Milan."
Nieman said his time as interim chief was a wonderful experience.
"I learned a lot and saw the administrative side" of police work, he said.
Most rewarding for both police officers, city officials said, was the seamless transition for the Milan Police Department.
Milan Mayor Kym Muckler said because the temporary transition ran so smoothly, residents hardly noticed that the chief was not on the job for almost two months.
Nieman, an eight-year veteran of the police force, said it was a very busy time for him, but he's gained a better understanding of both sides of police work.
"Everyone stepped up - all the officers, dispatchers and reserves, city administration, department heads in the city everyone," Nieman said.
So would be consider a chief of police position one day?
"That would be a long time in the future," he said.
