Seven Big Reds on way to state

Milan will send a total of seven athletes to the Division 2 state meet June 2 after an impressive showing at last Saturday's regional meet in Linden.

The Milan boys finished fifth out of 16 teams with a solid total of 69.5 points and qualified to compete in five different events at state.
Leading the way for the Big Reds was Anthony Marshall, who finished second (claiming automatic state qualification) in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, running11.12 and 22.42, respectively.
Marshall was also a member of Milan's two qualifying relay teams. The 800 relay team featuring Marshall, Ron Spears, Kyle Love, and Leo Gabrielzyk took home a regional championship by running 1:29.37, .24 ahead of second-place Flint Southwestern. The time set a new school record, breaking the mark set by Blake Novak, Matt Sabo, Earl Ford and Anthony Griffin in 1989.
Marshall, Cedric Douglas, Love, and Spears combined to run a 44.24 in the 400 relay, good for third place and under the state qualifying time.
"We're happy for 'Junior'," Milan boys' head coach Rich Pellegrini said referring to Marshall by nickname. "He had a great meet. Winning that relay and setting that record is going to be something those guys are going to remember for a long time."
But Marshall was far from the only Big Red to shine as Spears also qualified in three events, running the relays and winning the long jump with a personal-best leap of 21'6.5". The only hiccup for Spears was an 11.15 in the 100 dash, three-tenths slower than he had run in tying
