Girl Scouts working toward goals

Four girls to earn Gold Award, seven to get bronze, nine silver

Milan-area Girl Scouts are going for the silver and gold this month as they work toward the highest they can earn in Girl Scouting.

Nine girls from the Milan will achieve their Silver Award this year, seven will earn their Bronze Award and four will start work toward their Gold Award.

Last month, 20 Scouts came together to serve a spaghetti dinner and help with a craft show, where 38 crafters exhibited. Four Girl Scouts planned the event. Keri Throne, 15, Samantha Shures, 15, Amanda Williams, 15, and Mellissa Tobias, 14, are now starting on their Gold Award after raising more than $200 from the dinner and craft show.

The cluster also will come together for an encampment at Milan's Girl Scout property, Camp Crawford. Planning the event is a part of a Silver Project for five other girls in the Milan cluster. Kaitlin Felty, Katherine Durkee, Madison Drozdowski, Amber Woody and Nichole Cloud are organizing a weekend in which the Milan Girl Scouts play games, make crafts, learn to work with individuals who are older and younger than they are and plan a skit for the whole cluster.

The girls earning their Bronze Award will be painting the inside of the Milan Girl Scout Cluster Trailer that holds all of the equipment for the group. They will complete an inventory and organize everything in the trailer so that it will be easier for any Girl Scout to borrow the equipment when needed.

These girls also will be building the bridge that the Milan Girl Scouts will use for their Bridging Ceremony. Liza Jane Throne, Heather Shures, Kimberly Billeau, Samantha Huelke, Dana Sowards, Brittney Fenrich and Monica Hall are working on the project.

"We have some awesome girls in the Milan cluster," said leader Lisa Ann Throne. "We appreciate the support of the community, too, as these girls grow and learn about serving those around them."
