Because of what organizers describe as sound financial investments, cooperation, generosity and foresight, the Greater Milan Area Community Foundation will again award grants to local groups and nonprofit projects for the third consecutive year.

Grant applications are available on the foundation's new Web site, www.GMACFMichigan.org and at the office of the Milan Area Chamber of Commerce located in the Old Fire Barn in downtown Milan.
The foundation was established in 2005 by a group of local residents in an effort to create a permanent charitable endowment fund form which grants may be made to nonprofit community groups and projects.
Requests for annual distributions will be reviewed by a grant committee. Then, according to chairman Chris Wexler, a committee will make award recommendations to the foundation board in early July and a reception will follow in September, when funds will be awarded.
Qualified grant applicants will serve residents of the greater Milan area and provide sustainable unique services toward improving quality of life. The applicant must currently operate without funds from the United Way and without religious or political affiliation.
Grant applications are due by June 1 and may be mailed to P.O. Box 204, Milan, MI 48160, or completed online.
Last year, 13 groups split $30,000 in grant funds, the returns earned from an investment pool on the foundation's established fund. The previous year, two groups were awarded grants totaling $7,000.
This year, Wexler said the foundation hopes to at least match last year's numbers.
"That's pretty remarkable, considering the horrendous state of the stock market at the end of the last quarter and the economy overall," he said.
"We are very excited to be in the position to again support such worthwhile causes."
Last year, funds went to Aid in Milan, the city of Milan Beautification Commission, Milan Adult and Community Education, the fire department, the historical society, Milan schools' community learning and Milan High School's literacy tutors class. Parks and recreation, the police, senior center, Planned Parenthood and the county's council on children also received a boost.
