JV Big Reds still undefeated

PUBLISHED: May 3, 2007

The Milan junior varsity baseball team continued its winning ways with a convincing doubleheader sweep of Plymouth-Salem last Saturday. The Big Reds shut out the Rocks in the first game, 14-0, before winning Game 2, 14-3.

In Game 1, the Big Reds got outstanding pitching from right-hander Kyle Crump. Crump allowed only one hit in the complete game victory while striking out nine.

The Big Reds scored the only run they would need in the first inning when Paul Irwin scratched out an infield single and then stole second. Following an error by the catcher, Irwin scored on a Robert Elliott sacrifice fly for the 1-0 lead.

Milan scored another run in the second and then three in the third, highlighted by a two-run home run by sophomore Aaron Straub. The 385-foot shot put the Big Reds up 5-0.

After six innings, the Big Reds held a 7-0 lead and then erupted for seven runs in the seventh to provide the final margin of 14. Mike Craig and Irwin each had two hits, while Matt Drewyor, Crump, Straub and Irwin all had two RBIs.

In Game 2, the Big Reds got another strong pitching performance, this time from left-hander Straub. Straub allowed two earned runs in the complete game victory and struck out 10 batters.

The Big Reds tallied five times in the opening frame as Irwin, Drewyor, Elliott, Straub and Rocky Garcia all crossed the plate. Milan added another three in the second as Elliott and Garcia each added RBI singles.

The Big Reds didn't score again until the sixth when they added two, following those runs with four more in the seventh. The seventh was highlighted by Straub's second two-run homer of the day.

For the contest, Drewyor and Garcia each had two hits, while Elliott added three, including two doubles and four RBIs. Elliott and Straub each scored four runs.

The Big Reds then strectched their record to 9-0 Monday with an 8-0 win over St. Mary Catholic Central.

Matt Drewyor struck out six and allowed only three hits in the complete game victory.

Crump and Straub each recorded a double and a single in the contest.
