The Waste Knot program honored more than 220 Washtenaw County businesses and agencies for their recycling and waste reduction efforts in 2006. Waste Knot partners received a plaque and were provided with an opportunity to meet and discuss waste reduction program ideas with other area businesses at the annual awards ceremony.
The Washtenaw County Department of Planning and Environment hosted the event, where attendees were treated to two guest speakers who presented further opportunities in reducing waste.
Dave Strenski presented the Ypsilanti Food Cooperative's solar panel project and Jessica Simon of the Resource Conservation District Development Council presented how ash trees damaged by the emerald ash borer are turned into a commodity.
In addition to the presentations, businesses shared waste reduction success stories at the event. The University of Michigan's Waste Management Team shared its story of diverting more than 14 tons of goods to local charitable agencies during student move-out.
The Waste Knot Program was developed to help local businesses with their waste prevention and recycling programs and to publicly recognize those that are making an effort to reduce, reuse and recycle materials in the work place.
