It didn't take long for the Milan girls' golf program to claim its first-ever dual meet win.

In only the second meet of the season (and in team history), the Big Reds upended fellow Huron League member Airport 241 to 245.
After tying for medalist honors (attributed to the low scorer in a given meet) in the Big Reds' debut against St. Mary Catholic Central, freshman Lindsey Lammers won it outright against Airport, pacing Milan to the victory with a nine-hole 47.
"After the SMCC meet we put in some extra days of practice, and that work paid off," said head coach Claire Neff. "Their attitude has just been outstanding ... the girls were really upbeat coming into the meet. We'd just gotten our uniforms and we really felt like a team."
While Lammers had the low score, it took a team effort to give Milan the four-stroke victory. Allie McAfee shot a 58, followed by a 62 from Amber Marks and a 74 from Jamie Barnett. It was Barnett's first official appearance for the Big Reds.
"They're a lot more comfortable on the course and they have a lot more confidence," Neff said. "We were all very happy with the win ... I couldn't be prouder."
The Big Reds couldn't quite repeat the feat two days later, falling to New Boston Huron 262-296 on the back nine of the same Carleton Glen course in Carleton on which they had defeated Airport.
Lammers again posted Milan's best score and again was the meet's medalist after shooting a 49. Marks, McAfee, and Raven Lapointe each scored between 80 and 85.
Despite seeing her team's score increase by more than 50 strokes, Neff was still more than pleased with the Big Reds' performance. LaPointe's 83, for one example, was a marked improvement on her score against SMCC.
"I was happy with the way they played," Neff said. "For some of these girls this was still the third nine holes they'd ever played. Getting a victory was nice, but the biggest goal is still to continue improving and continue to get experience."
Milan looked for that improvement Wednesday at Monroe-Jefferson, but for the time being, the Big Reds are happy to have at least one notch in the win column.
"Right now we've got the same record as New Boston Huron," Neff noted. "We're moving forward. We just have to work on our consistency."
