Milan track flattens Flat Rock

The Milan track teams are off and running.

In their first full meet of the season, both the Big Red boys' and girls' teams dominated visiting Flat Rock last Thursday, winning 100-28 and 84-44 respectively.
The Milan boys denied the Rams even one first-place finish, winning all 16 events.
In the field events, Corey Gunderson won the shot put, Jake Hill the discus and Eric Betts the high jump with a career-best jump of 6 feet.
Ron Spears debuted for Milan track by winning both the 100-meter dash and the long jump with a career-best jump of 21'2". Other sprint winners included Anthony Marshall in the 200 and Leo Gabrielzyk in the 400. Erik Myyra won the 800.
Kyle Love in the 110 and 300 hurdles and Kyle Anderson in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters were each double-winners, with each posting a pair of career-best times.
Love, Spears and Marshall joined Cedric Douglas in taking the 400-meter relay. Douglas was also a member of the first-place 800 relay with Gabrielzyk, Marshall and Randy Butts.
In the distance relays, Myyra, Gabrielzyk, Butts and Sam Rowe won the 1,600 and Myyra, Lance Smith, Anthony Mann, and Brian Kirkpatrick took the 3,200.
Second-place finishes included Myyra in the high jump, David Box in the shotput, Gabrielzyk in the long jump, Marshall in the 100 dash, Jesse Nie in the 1,600, Brian Kirkpatrick in the 800, Milton Page in the 200 dash and Lance Smith in the 3,200.
The Milan girls won 11 events and swept the top three places in both the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter relays on their way to the comprehensive victory.
"We had some pleasant surprises," said head coach Steve Porter. "It was a nice way to start the season."
Sophomore Ashley Agar had a strong showing, winning the 100 hurdles in 18.3 and the 300 hurdles in 53.9. Agar also ran the first leg of the first-place 800 relay, combining with Mareisha Lala, Remina Reed and Jessica Schumann to run 2:00.1, as well as with Lala, Reed and Loren Weber to win the 1600 relay in 4:42.3.
Milan also claimed the other top two spots in the 1,600 relay, with Jade Clark, Angela Swain, Samantha Beeler and Kara Porter (5:05.1) finishing second. In the 3200 relay, Emily Wilson, Jordan Tomecek, Porter and Tiffany Stoddard (11:15.3) took first, with Beeler, Clark, Katie Okonski and Jenna Manor (12:11.7) in second.
In field events, Taylor McGovern (4'10") and Loren Weber (4'8") finished 1-2 for Milan, Charlotte Straub (12'11") won the long jump, and Stephanie Kanitz took both a first in the shot put (31'10") and third in the discus (77'2").
Reed had a solid day in the sprints, taking second in the 100-meter dash in 13.9 and third in the 400 dash, one spot behind teammate Lala (1:08.6).
Erica Worrell (32.1) and Schumann (32.7) finished 2-3 in the 200 dash. Worrell, Swain, Schumann and Coon (1:01.4), and Adrienne Kanitz, Haylee Weber, Gena Miracle and Kelsey Marzec (1:05.2) gave Milan both the top two spots in the 400 relay.
Wilson won both the 800 meters (in 2:40.1) and the 1,600 (5:55.7), followed by second-place Tiffany Stoddard in the 1600 (5:58.2). Stoddard would go on to win the 3200 in 13:33.6, with Manor (13:54.8) in second.
