"We have this wonderful auditorium with great acoustics and want to bring in music that will appeal to the entire community to the people who made it possible for us to build this theater," said Milan High School Principal Ron Reed.
He and volunteer Doug Gilson are orchestrating the concert, continuing a new tradition for Milan of community entertainment. Last year, they brought The Fabulous Hubcaps to Milan, and plan to invite the oldies group back in the fall and hope to organize a vintage car show and cookout.
"These concerts are a great opportunity for students, families and friends from Milan, Saline, Ypsilanti and all our neighboring townships to enjoy amazing music at a local venue for a very reasonable ticket price," said Gilson, who is one of the masterminds behind the Milan Fair and other local festivals, and head of the custodial staff at Milan High School.
Tickets for the Glenn Miller Orchestra are $12 in advance or at the door for the 7 p.m. show April 30.
Reed said the district's goal for the theater is to have it used for student productions and community events, but also for professional productions.
"Lisa Goerlitz, Milan High School theater director, has done a great job on providing reasonable opportunities for our students and local community to access and use the theater for events from student productions, to assemblies, to ceremonies, and dance recitals," Reed said.
He and Gilson wanted to take the productions to the next level by bringing in professional productions.
"Doug has a great sense of the business, after years of his work with the community fair, and knows the right people to contact to bring quality entertainment here," Reed said.
"I visited another school in Michigan that was doing the same thing, and I am convinced we can provide quality professional productions that also increase the revenue for our theater program," he said.
The initial program funds will come from athletic fundraising, theater community projects and the principal's external funds. Planners hope for a profit that will be used for future productions and athletics.
Gilson said volunteers are needed to help with promotions and ticket sales, and to help target and organize future shows.
Tickets are available in advance by calling 439-5091 or at the door.
