Big Red swimmers honored at banquet

Team looks back at year that ended in top-10 state meet finish

By Jerry Hinnen, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: April 19, 2007

The Milan boys' swimming and diving team honored its seniors and outstanding swimmers and divers from the recent 2006-2007 season and its annual end-of-season banquet April 12.

Senior Ryan Bordine was named team Most Valuable Player. A four-year Big Red swimmer, Bordine won the Division 2 state title in the 100 freestyle and finished runner-up in the 50 freestyle.

Bordine was also honored as one of the team's four captains, along with seniors Jason Schroeder, Cody Schmitt, and Kyle Cornelison.

"They did an unbelievable job this season," head coach Dan Heikka said. "We would not have had the season we had without them."

Heikka also said it wwould be too difficult to name just one Most Improved Player from this year's team, so he named four: Cornelison, his brother Kray Cornelison, Matt Smith, and Justin Beaudrie.

The Most Valuable Diver award went to Schmitt, who qualified for state competition for the first time after narrowly missing out as a sophomore and junior.

Heikka's Coaches Awards went to Leandro Gabrielzyk and David Schwartz for their hard work, leadership, and ability to keep practice fun.

The captains for the 2007-2008 season were announced at the banquet as well. Captains will be Ian Pendleton, Zach Olsen, and Matt Smith.
