Now that the hint of green is promising the end of winter, two truly spring holidays mark the calendar.

Earth Day, on Tuesday, marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Last year, a record billion people participated in activities to promote environmental citizenship and progressive action worldwide.

Arbor Day, held annually the last Friday of April, is a nationally celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care. This year, Arbor Day will be celebrated April 25.

Organizations in Saline and Milan are planning celebrations in honor of both days. York Township Earth Day and Parks Appreciation Day is set from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Sandra Richardson Park, 9495 Platt Road.

Local environmental musician Joe Reilley will perform at 11 a.m. Park visitors will find children's activities, nature walks, door prizes, free seedlings to the first 100 visitors, Farm Bureau talks, educational environmental booths, hybrid vehicles and more.

In Saline at 3 p.m. April 25, the designation of a state and national champion Downy Hawthorn tree will take place. The award-winning tree is on the property of the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 4001 Ann Arbor-Saline Road.

In Milan, Michigan Citizens Against Toxic Substances is offering free tree seedlings. MCATS took orders in March and will distribute them between 9 and 11 a.m. April. 26.

"Trees are the most generous citizens a community can have. They give off oxygen, capture carbon, provide shade, defend against winds, define property borders, improve your privacy, provide homes for birds and small animals, and prevent erosion, to say nothing of raising property values and warming your fireplace," said MCATS officer Rod Hill of Milan.

In celebration of Earth Day 2008, the Saline Middle School Parent-Teacher Organization is sponsoring a collection of used cell phones, ink cartridges, batteries. laser, fax, copier, inkjet cartridges, used laptops, PDAs and iPods. Those items that are accepted can be found at the Web site at www.cartridgesforkids.com/recycle.html. The collection will conclude May 9. Donations can be dropped off at 7190 North Maple Road.

Also in Saline, mark your calendar for May 3 for Saline Parks Clean-up Day at Mill Pond Park. The annual event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Residents and neighbors are invited to bring rakes, garden gloves and shovels to help tidy up Saline's largest public park.
