Students in grades third through eighth were tested in four areas and ninth-graders were given assessments in social studies during the two-week long test period in October 2007. The MEAP quizzed kids on skills learned through the end of the previous year.
Fourth-graders in 2006-2007 improved more than 10 percent from the previous year in math, English language arts and writing. Seventh-graders also showed a notable increase in writing.
Across the board, Milan students scored better than the state average in 10 tests, improving district scores in 11 areas as compared to the previous year.
Notable decreases were seen in scores in seventh-grade reading and sixth grade writing.
Statewide, math scores went up for the third straight year in every grade except fifth, which saw only a slight decline, reflecting the scores in Milan.
Writing scores improved at the third-, fifth-, seventh- and eighth-grade levels in Milan and also throughout Michigan.
Eighth-grade science and reading scores were on the rise statewide and 11 percent in Milan schools. This year, a new district science curriculum was implemented, aligning the needs of students with respect to the high school graduation requirements and the Michigan Merit Curriculum. MEAP scores in this area, then, are expected to continue to improve.
