While the search continues in earnest for a new director for the Milan Public Library, patrons and staff will celebrate National Library Week with literary fun and games starting Monday.

Interim Director Joyce Armitage said visitors to the library next week can join in a contest and learn more about how to enjoy all that the facility has to offer.
There are two new staff members to meet, too. Emily Szymanski has joined as the new reference librarian and Jennifer Perryman is the new youth assistant.
A second story time on Thursday has been added based on the popularity of the traditional Friday morning session and children and their caregivers are encouraged to attend.
Also, the Friends of the Library group has purchased three new computers. Internet access is available for school assignments and research, and the computers have been particularly useful to residents conducting job searches, Armitage said.
There are three computers equipped with filters for users younger than 18 years old. Internet access does require a signed agreement and residents may reserve a time slot by calling the library at 439-1240.
Library employees have moved the nonfiction audio books to the front of the buildings and several stools have been added throughout the stacks so patrons can browse the lower shelves in seated comfort.
Suggestions to improve the library are welcome and the board of trustees reviews the contents of the suggestions box at each meeting.
Recently, endowments have been made by Milan families in memory of loved ones, including Richard McMullen, Bernith "Lou" Stanton, Jack Palmer and Elizabeth "Betty" Kiefer. These memorial gifts have lasting impact on the operating budget for years to come and are a fitting tribute to those who supported and enjoyed the Milan Public Library, Armitage said.
The search continues
The Library Board will interview four candidates, shortlisted by the executive search firm contracted with for job. While trustees said Armitage's cooperation and contributions as acting director have been invaluable to the success of the library during the last few years, they are hoping to hire a permanent director very soon.
Trustee Millard Phillips said there are three prospects from Michigan and one from Florida being considered.
"We are very concerned with filling this position, and finding the right person to steer the library in the right direction and bring new ideas and energy to the programs," he said.
