By Brian Cox, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: April 12, 2007

Milan School District residents will have a chance to familiarize themselves with the four candidates for school board at an open Meet-the-Candidates forum April 18.

Two four-year seats are open on the school board with longtime incumbents Dave Johnson and Ron Tarrant opting not to run for re-election.

Running in the May 8 election are Lynn Greer, Janice Kliger, John Leacher and Eric Peacock.

The forum will afford the candidates the opportunity to provide their backgrounds, interests, and concerns and to field questions from the audience.

Each candidate will have 10 minutes to introduce themselves and answer three prepared questions, including what they perceive to be the role and responsibilities of the school board, how they would prepare themselves for making "big picture" decisions, and what they believe to be the biggest challenges facing the district. They also will be permitted to discuss any school-related topic that is of special interest to them.

The candidates will be asked to address questions from the audience submitted on index cards and will be allotted two minutes for final comments.

The candidate pool offers a range of backgrounds and experience.

Greer is a sales and marketing manager for a water treatment business in Ann Arbor. He has lived in Milan for 17 years.

Kiger is a mother of five children, three of whom have graduated from Milan High School. She has lived in the district since 1983 and has been an active volunteer in the classrooms.

Leacher, a lieutenant with the Romulus Police Department, moved to the district two years ago. he served five years on the Airport Community Schools board.

Peacock is a local dentist with Milan Dental Associates. He received a BA in chemistry from Eastern Michigan University in 1991 and obtained his DDS degree from the University of Michigan in 1995. He and his wife, Dawn, have two children, Benjamin, 7, and Gabriel, 5.

The Meet the Candidates forum will be held in the Milan High School theater 7 p.m. April 18.

"I'm sure we will have a fun evening," said Superintendent Dennis McComb.
