It was a hallmark year for the Milan varsity wrestling team as it was the second straight year the program assembled more than 20 wins, posting a dual record of 24-14.

The closest the Big Reds had come in the past to mounting 20 wins was in 1985 when they went 19-5.
The team looked back on the season Sunday at its annual banquet.
Several of the wrestlers entered the school's record books. Junior Josh Pegouskie (189) tied Butch McCarty for the most escapes in a season with 34. McCarty set the mark in 2000. Pegouskie, who this year advanced to districts with a 35-15 record, was named the team's Most Improved Player. He registered 11 pins and lost only one match by pin.
Sophomore Dan Vivian (119), who at the banquet was presented with the Most Dedicated Award, entered the record books by taking over the top spot in dual meet wins with 33 and three-point near falls with 47.
Last year, Vivian claimed three spots on the record charts for freshman varsity wrestlers with 47 reversals, three major decisions and 27 dual meet wins. Vivian finished this season with a 38-9 record, earning 19 pins and losing to a fall only once.
A sign of good things to come for Milan wrestling are freshmen Cody O'Keefe's (125) and Sean Domas' (215) appearances on the freshmen records list. O'Keefe now holds the freshman record for three-point near falls with 31 and technical falls with four.
Posting a record of 30-19, O'Keefe was named Most Promising, the same award bestowed on Vivian last year.
Domas now holds the freshman record for escapes with 28. Presented with the Coaches' Award, Domas went 28-24. Over the season, he compiled 17 pins.
Garrett Gimson (152) earned the Scholar Athlete award and Aaris Gruber (103) received the Richard Rangel Award. Jacob Nelson came away with the most pins award, winning 28 of his 34 victories by fall.
The Outstanding Wrestler award went to sophomore David Box, who suffered a fractured pelvic bone that kept him off the mat for five weeks, but battled back to advance to districts. Box (285) ended the year with a 23-9 record, 19 of those wins coming from pins.
The varsity season may be over, but wrestling is far from done. The Milan Kids Take-Down Tournament is a two-day event at Milan High School that begins April 20. The first tournament will begin 5 p.m. April 20 with the second tournament starting at 10 a.m. April 21. Registration is $25 for both tournaments or $15 for one.
The tournaments are open to wrestlers 14 years old and younger. Admission is $3 per adult and $1 for students.
