The newly formed Milan Area Art Association has elected its first officers to help the group foster fellowship and interaction between local artisans and to further art appreciation in the community and surrounding area.

The new board includes Joanne Keilman, president; Ammanuel Negassi, vice president; Kathy Fiser, secretary; and Darla Arrick and Judy Spike, co-treasurers.
A dozen artists and supporters first met in October of last year to discuss the idea of an art association to serve the Milan area. Arrick, owner of Picture This, and glass artist Raymond Huff approached the Milan Area Chamber of Commerce, which helped prompt the initial gatherings, where guest speakers educated the group about becoming a nonprofit entity, setting goals and writing a charter.
The association is made up of a myriad of artists, including wood carvers, glass blowers, watercolor and acrylic painters, calligraphers, bead workers, poets, writers and more.
"The culture of art is so diverse and the members wanted to open it up to all forms of art," said Norma Shull Smith, the chamber's administrative assistant and proponent of the new association. "And, we already have artists from Milan, Deerfield, Dundee, Saline, Ann Arbor and Monroe."
The art association will initially operate under the umbrella of the Milan Parks and Recreation Department, which will help organize classes and meeting space.
At the association's founding meeting, members of the group wrote a mission statement and discussed the second annual Milan Art Contest, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 5 at the Milan Baptist Church. The entry deadline is April 28 and information is available at Picture This, the Milan Downtown Development Authority or by calling 439-0404.
The art association also will introduce its organization and sharing members' artwork at the May 12 Milan Chamber News and Network Meeting.
