The month of March has been a busy one at the library as computer classes for adults started on Saturday mornings to teach people computer and Internet basics.

We are anticipating the arrival of our new Internet stations fully loaded with Microsoft Office 2007, and have begun offering wireless access for those patrons with laptop computers.
In April, the library celebrates some special events. First of all, it's National Poetry Month. It was established by the Academy of American Poets as a month-long, national celebration of poetry. The concept was to increase the attention paid by individuals and the media to the art of poetry, to living poets, to our poetic heritage, and to poetry books and magazines.
In the end, we hope to achieve an increase in the visibility, presence and accessibility of poetry in our culture.
Of course, Milan residents can access poetry in books at the Milan Public Library. We carry many of the classics and a few newer selections, as well poems by Billy Collins, Maya Angelou and Rita Dove.
The library's Web site will offer weekly poems and links to more at www.milanlibrary.org.
We plan to celebrate National Poetry Month by offering a poetry contest for adults. Stop by the library for an entry form and submit your original poetry any time in the month of April. Poems will go on display during the month.
Also, stop by for your "poem in my pocket" poem. Poetry will be printed on small pieces of paper that you can carry and read throughout the day.
Upcoming events include:
"Poems and Pizza" for teens 5:30 p.m. April 3. They'll make a "poetree," write and share poems, and eat pizza.
Children will read and write poetry while adding to the "poetree," 6:45 p.m. April 10 for children in third through fifth grades.
Children will read and write poetry while adding to the "poetree," 6:45 p.m. April 17 for children in first and second grades.
For more details on National Poetry Month, visit the Web site www.poets.org. It's a database of poems.
The week of April 13 through 19 is National Library Week. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is an observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April.
It's a time to celebrate the contributions of the nation's libraries and librarians, and to promote library use and support. Stop in for a bookmark and play a trivia game for prizes this week.
We will conclude April with a special program of card-making and stamping 7 p.m. April 22. Adult participants will take home five handmade greeting cards. There is no charge for the program, but registration is required.
Call the library at 439-1240 to sign up.
We look forward to seeing you and celebrating libraries and literature.
