From that pool, the board is expected to select a handful of candidates to interview later this month.
Most of the applicants are from Michigan and some are from within Washtenaw County, according to Washtenaw Intermediate School District Superintendent Bill Miller, who could not provide more details because the applicants requested confidentiality.
In January, the board voted to conduct an outside search for the successor of Superintendent Dennis McComb, who announced in December plans to retire at the end of June after 12 years leading the district. At a cost estimated not to exceed $2,000, the board contracted with the WISD to coordinate the search.
"It's going along smoothly," Miller said of the selection process.
Before going to the board, the applications will be vetted by Michael Emlaw, a consultant with the Michigan Association of School Boards. Emlaw will check references and run background checks before presenting the board his recommendations on which candidates the board should consider interviewing.
The board will have the opportunity to review all 15 applications before narrowing the field, which it hopes to do at a special meeting March 19.
The names of the candidates who make the cut will be made public once the candidates have agreed to an interview.
Interviews are planned for March 25 and 26.
Emlaw will provide the board some training in the interview process.
Following the initial interviews, the board may narrow the field again for second interviews and site visits.
Assistant Superintendent Bryan Girbach, who has been with the district since 1992, first as a high school math teacher and then principal of Milan Middle School, has expressed interest in the superintendent's position and said he planned to apply for the job.
He is considered to be a strong inside candidate for the post.
The board aims to make its final choice at its regularly scheduled meeting April 23.
