The high school band takes part in the event every year. This year, the musicians were scheduled to play at 9:45 a.m. After 30 minutes of warm-up, they went on stage and performed "United Nations March" by K.L. King, "Freedom Road" by James Curnow and "Celebrations" by Ed Huckeby in front of the judges.
After playing the music, which had been previously prepared by the school, the band had to sight-read music that they had never seen before. There are two pieces that the band has to sight-read. One is a march, and the other is an overture.
After playing the music, band members were given feedback about what they did correctly and what they should work on. They were also given a score at the end of the day.
The music and performance was judged on a scale of one to four, with one being the best and four being the worst. The Milan band received a two rating. The score was based on the music that the band prepared, as well as the outcome of the sight-reading portion. The band's overall score was also a two.
"I think it went well -- better than last year," said Kyle Anderson, a junior at Milan High School.
Last year, the band received a three.
Most of the students enjoy the event because it allows them to perform and get feedback from people who don't attend the usual concerts that the band puts on at Milan High School. Some students also enjoy the band festival because it allows them to play somewhere other than the school.
All students who attended the event will receive a medal for participation later in the spring.
