With longtime incumbents Dave Johnson and Ron Tarrant choosing not to seek re-election, the field is wide open.
The deadline for filing with the Washtenaw County Clerk's office was 4 p.m. Tuesday. Running in the May 8 election are Lynn Greer, Janice Kiger, John Leacher and Eric Peacock.
Greer, 54, is a sales and marketing manager for a water treatment business in Ann Arbor. His family has lived in Milan for 17 years, during which time he has been particularly active in girls' athletics booster clubs. He has one daughter who has graduated from Milan High School and another who will graduate this year.
Greer said he chose to run for school board because he wants to give back to the district.
"I think it's a super school system," he said. "They've done so much for my kids, I think it's time to pay back. My philosophy has always been to get out and do what you can."
Kiger, 48, is a mother of five children, three of whom have graduated from Milan High School. She has a child in middle school and another at Symons Elementary School. She has lived in the district since 1983 and has been an active volunteer in the classrooms.
"I care very much about what's happening in our schools, and if there's anything I can do to help, I want to," she said about her decision to run. "I just care that when students leave Milan schools, they'll be on par with anyone."
Kiger said it was important that board members maintain a good and open dialogue with teachers and the community, and are visible in the schools.
Leacher, 44, is a lieutenant with the Romulus Police Department and has been a police officer for almost 20 years. He served on the school board in Airport for five years before his family moved to Milan two years ago.
"We've become very attached to the community in the short time we've been here," he said. "I like the direction the district is going and want to help it keep going that way."
Leacher has a daughter who is a freshman at Milan High School and a daughter in the sixth grade.
Peacock, a local dentist, could not be reached for comment by press time.
