The performance marks the third year for the Evening with the Arts program, which is put on by Milan students. This year's theme is the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein. The selections include "Oklahoma," "South Pacific," "The King and I" and "The Sound of Music."
Six Milan High School students are performing in both the Evening with the Arts and Milan High School's production of "The Sound of Music." The Evening with the Arts performance will not only give them some practice for the school play, but will also showcase for the community what they can do outside of school.
"It shows people that we can do constructive things outside of school," said Kaity Hill, a 16-year-old junior at Milan High School. "We're not all getting into trouble and doing bad things."
The evening will include a silent auction with prizes ranging from tuition for a three-week drama camp to an autographed program from the Broadway show "Wicked."
"We're raising money for the self-funded drama club," said David Harwood, 17. "We need a lot of help."
The event also helps raise funds for the Milan High School drama department.
The students have been working on their numbers for more than three months and feel confident about the show.
"It will show the city our talent," said Lauren Kartje, 14, a freshman at the high school.
The students have a hand in everything that goes into the performance.
"People put out ideas," Harwood said, "then it's picked by performers, and sometimes things don't get picked."
All of the students have been involved in at least two previous events. Kartje has been involved the longest, with this year's Evening with the Arts being her third.
Students got involved with the event through the drama program at the high school.
"If it has to do with drama, I'm usually involved," said Alisha Eddy, a 17-year-old senior.
"Performing is a passion," said Marrissa Leclair, a 16-year-old junior.
Also involved in the event is Kat Allore, 17, a senior at Milan High School.
The event will be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m. A buffet dinner will be served by Angel Food Catering of Ypsilanti.
Tickets are $40 per person and are available by calling Paula Kartje at 439-8453. Donations for the silent auction and raffle are also being accepted by Kartje.
