The cold temperatures and biting wind outside did not chill the optimistic spirits of those celebrating the groundbreaking of a new medical facility on Arkona Road.
A veritable who's who of Milan gathered Jan. 30 at the Milan Free Methodist Church to mark the groundbreaking of Integrated Health Associates' planned 21,754-square-foot medical facility, which will be built between the Meadowbrook subdivision and the church.
The commercial development was heralded as another significant step toward revitalizing the city's economy and expanding its industrial and commercial base.
"We are thrilled with the high quality project that IHA is building in the city," said Bob Grostick, the city's building and zoning officer. "We feel their investment is an affirmation of Milan as the up-and-coming community."
"This sizeable investment in an uncertain economic environment reflects our confidence in the future of the Milan-area communities and IHA's desire to be its preferred medical practice," said Bill Fileti, IHA's president and chief executive officer.
The Milan Planning Commission approved IHA's preliminary and final site plans in November.
City officials first began talking with IHA about the project two years ago.
The office building will house private practices and will operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, said Dianna Huckstein, IHA's director of development.
"Our assessment of the need for this facility was borne out of discussions with community leaders and health care providers," Huckstein said in a news release.
The new facility will allow IHA to expand its Milan Family Practice Center to include obstetrics, gynecology and pediatric physicians, said Huckstein, as well as providing new laboratory and radiology services to the community.
The company also plans to add a range of specialty services on a phased basis in the future.
"This enhanced access will make it very convenient for Milan-area residents to receive the care they need at the center," Huckstein said.
The property was rezoned from residential to O-1 for office, Grostick said.
IHA was formed in 1994 with a few independent private-practice groups in Washtenaw County. The company now has 27 office locations and includes some 130 physicians.
A construction timeline has not yet been nailed down, said Grostick, but he expects the project to move quickly.
The general contractor for the project is AIMS Construction in Livonia. The architect is Yamasaki Associates Inc. in Troy, a firm for building the original World Trade Center.
A tentative opening date for the new medical facility has been set for July, according to IHA officials.
