The Milan varsity bowling teams got their first wins of their inaugural season Monday night against Lenawee Christian.
The varsity boys' team defeated Lenawee Christian 23-7. The Big Reds won the first baker game by a squeak, 155-153, and then went on to win both regular games 839-738 and 787-634.
John Poulos bowled the high game of the night with a 210, which came on the heels of another strong performance in the first game, where he bowled 191.
Jason Straub bowled a 197 in his first win. Also winning matches for Milan were Eric Myyra, Rocky Garcia and Jacob Varney.
The varsity girls' team won by forfeit. Marissa Schumer bowled a high game of 157 and Holly Derby bowled a strong 139.
Milan's first win came seven games into the season.
"They were pretty good," said coach Melanie Redmond. "They were all fired up about it. It was pretty cool."
Lenawee Christian is ranked 10th in the bowling league and Milan is in ninth, but Redmond said she was pleased the Big Reds beat a team they should.
Milan didn't have as much luck Tuesday night against Gabriel Richard, but the varsity girls' team came close, falling by the narrow margin of 16-1/2 to 13-1/2.
Toni Barnett won her first game 161-108. In the second game, Amber Marks pulled out a 99-80 win and Nicole Smith distanced her opponent 115-63.
"It was a close game," Redmond said. "The team bowled well."
The varsity boys' team lost 23-7, but the score belied individual performances. The Big Reds won the second baker game by a single point, 138-137.
For the second match in two nights, Poulos bowled the high game, coming in with a 186. It wasn't enough to win his game, however. The Gabriel Richard bowler produced a 214.
Straub also continued to bowl well, winning his first game 179-134. Garcia won again, too, with a 172-151 victory, and Varney came away with a 167-143 win in his second game.
Both Milan varsity teams are now 1-6 overall. They next compete Feb. 15 at Adrian High School before facing Chelsea on the road the following day.
The league tournament is Feb. 19 at Colonial Lanes in Ann Arbor.
