The Milan freshman boys' basketball team was missing several regulars for its Jan. 22 game against Riverview, but it didn't matter much as the Big Reds rolled to a 60-35 victory.
Jon Spence began the game by tipping the ball to Eric Harrison, whose touch pass found Danny Gonzales for a Milan lay-up just two seconds into the first quarter. The Big Reds would go on to open the game on a 7-0 run and never look back.
"The game was in our hands from the opening tip," said head coach Jeff Scott. "As a whole, we played one of our most complete games on both ends. It was my first game in five years as a coach that every player on the team scored. We passed the ball well, we took care of the ball and, most importantly, we played great defense."
The Big Red defense got a lift from DeQuan Chambers, who finished with a team-high eight of Milan's 24 steals.
Milan also benefited from the introduction of newly-eligible player Javon Freeman, who finished with four points, six rebounds and three steals.
Milan led 19-8 after one quarter, 31-16 at halftime, and 41-26 after three.
Harrison led Milan with 16 points, followed by Gonzales with 14, Tyler Borso with seven, Spence with six, Drew Heath with four, Spencer Dennison with four, Chambers with three and Colton Philpi with two.
Spence led the team with 10 rebounds, while Borso and Philipi added five each.
Milan now stands at 9-2 overall and 6-1 in Huron League play.
Milan 70, Flat Rock 39
The Milan freshman boys' basketball kept firing on all cylinders with a 70-39 win over Flat Rock at home Jan. 25.
Milan had only won by three in the team's first meeting, but a new defensive scheme installed with the help of assistant coach Billy Mitchell and solid play from the Big Red bench led to a much easier win in the rematch.
"Tonight, it was all about our reserves," said head coach Jeff Scott. "Drew Heath and our defensive spark plug DeQuan Chambers led our team to victory with stellar play and great poise.
"Coach Mitchell felt our speed and aggressiveness would be perfect in the new (defensive) set-up, and he was right," Scott said. "We had been focusing on our rotations on the defensive end in all of our sets, and it paid off."
Milan finished with 24 steals and a 50-24 rebounding edge, giving Milan many more shooting opportunities than the Rams.
After leading 16-10 after one and 26-17 at halftime, the Big Reds took advantage in the third quarter to score 28 points in the period and stretch the lead to 54-29.
Eric Harrison led Milan with 17 points, followed by Danny Gonzales with 15, Chambers with 10, Jon Spence with eight, and Heath Javon Freeman, Colton Philipi and Cody Townsley with four each. Spencer Dennison and Tyler Borso each had two.
Dennison added a team-high 11 boards, while Borso and Freeman each grabbed eight.
