With the exception of a tough loss to New Boston, the Milan varsity wrestling team has proved to be a force to contend with in the Huron League this season.
The Big Reds chalked up another league win last Wednesday, defeating St. Mary Catholic Central 51-26.
In the second dual of the night, Milan crushed Dearborn Divine Child 68-3.
Winning both of their matches on the night for Milan were Aaris Gruber, who continued her hot streak at the 103-pound weight class and now holds an overall record of 23-15, and Dan Vivian (125), who now stands at 32-5 with 25 falls to his credit.
Sophomore Cody O'Keefe (26-10) won his matches at 130 and freshman Tim Sims (140) raised his victory total to 15.
Junior Jacob Nelson (160) became one of four Big Reds to break the 30-win mark with a victory over his SMCC and Divine Child op-ponents and Dan Bailey (171) came up with his 17th and 18th wins on the year.
Sophomore Sean Domas (215) and junior David Box (285) continued to dominate in the heavyweights. After winning both their matches, Domas's overall record is now 32-5 while Box has suf-fered only one defeat in 39 bouts.
Senior Kyle Latta won at 189 against SMCC and senior Jeff Fletcher (119) defeated his Divine Child opponent for his 17th win of the season.
Also winning matches against Divine Child were sophomore David Wilson (145) and freshman Mark Thornton (152).
Head coach Gary Jonseck said the team is seeing the results of hard work, which he hopes will continue to pay off as the league meet and team districts approach.
"The kids are working real hard right now," he said, "and we're just trying to keep the wheels on the wagon. This isn't something that just happens."
Jonseck was also pleased with the performances of his freshman and sophomore wrestlers.
"Younger kids have had opportunities and they've made great strides in meet-ing those opportunities," he said. "They're doing real well."
Milan's overall dual re-cord is 28-9. They faced an-other league opponent Wednesday when they took on Riverview and will hold their last league match at home against Flat Rock Feb. 6 leading up to the league meet Feb. 9 and team districts Feb. 13.
"It doesn't get any easier and it shouldn't," said Jon-seck.
