The Milan bowling program is no different.
The fledgling Milan bowling team is still in the hunt for its first win after five matches, but coach Melanie Redmond spirits remain high.
"I don't think any of them are taking the record to heart too much," she said. "They're having fun and learning."
There are signs of improvement and development for the team that is in its first year of competition.
The Big Reds JV team won a game in a match against Tecumseh Jan. 16, 609-498. High bowlers included Andrew Ciavattone with 155 and Chase McGettigan with 145.
The varsity squad narrowly lost to the Indians 135-132 after winning the second game of the three-game match. Rocky Garcia posted the high score for Milan with a 194.
The varsity girls had a more difficult time of it against Tecumseh, unable to pull out a single game and falling 30-0. Jamie Barnett put in a good effort with a 132.
The girls pulled out a game win against Adrian Jan. 23, outscoring the Maples 120-114 in the second game, though losing the match 24-6.
Jamie Barnett earned a point bowling a 136 and Amber Marks bowled a 140 to score the second point.
The varsity boys' team lost all three games, falling 28-2. Jason Straub bowled a high game of 189 and Jacob Varney came through with a 163.
In the junior varsity match, Matt Nisbett won two games with a 146 and a 118. Anthony Mann won with a 141. Michael Spence, though losing his game, bowled the team's high score with a 158.
Redmond said her team needed to get better at playing matches the way they performed during practices.
The boys' varsity team is a good example, she said. During practice, they consistently bowl in the low- to mid-200s, but in matches their averages drop to the mid-100s.
"It's just a matter of us putting it together in the matches," Redmond said.
The program held a fund-raiser earlier this month at which they raised $900 to help finance tournament and regional play. The bowl-a-thon was held at Maplewood Lanes in Saline. Redmond said some of the money will be used to pay for bowling lessons for the team.
