In a ceremony at halftime of last Friday's Milan boys' basketball game, former Milan basketball player Heather Frank, cross country and track star Kenneth "Satch" Head, and the 1992 boys' and 1996 girls' swimming teams were inducted as the Milan Hall of Fame's 2007 class.
"It definitely means a lot," Frank said of the honor. "Our team accomplished a lot and put in a lot of hard work, and it's nice to have that hard work acknowledged. It's nice to be remembered and it's been great to see my old coach."
A member of Milan High's class of 1997, Frank averaged 18.5 points, 13 rebounds, three blocks and two assists in leading the 1996 Big Reds girls' basketball team to a District championship. Frank was named All-State by the Detroit Free-Press and Honorable Mention All-American by USA Today, and played in the girls' Michigan All-Star game. Frank was also named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and was nominated for the state's Miss Basketball Award.
A three-year starter, Frank holds school records for both blocks and rebounds in a season with 65 and 270, respectively. She attended Ohio State on a four-year basketball scholarship and is currently living in Jacksonville, Fla., while pursuing a career in optometry.
"Satch" graduated from Milan in 1965. A gifted athlete who lettered in football and basketball as well as cross country and track, Head won the Huron League and Regional championships in the mile run for three consecutive years. Head set the school mile record in 1965 with a time of 4:23.5 and finished third in the state in the event for three straight years.
Head attended Eastern Michigan on a track and cross country scholarship and became a two-time All American in cross country while at EMU. He was elected captain of both the track and cross country teams during the 1968-69 season and posted a career best time in the mile of 4:08.6.
Head lives in Ann Arbor with his wife Terazina.
"It's definitely an honor," Head said after the induction ceremony. "There have been a lot of great athletes at Milan. I've got a lot of family and friends here, so that was great."
The 1992 boys' swim team and 1996 girls' swim team were inducted collectively for their outstanding seasons.
The seniors on the 1992 boys' team finished their career with a four-year record of 56 wins, two losses, and a tie, including wins over powerhouses Birmingham Brother Rice and Zeeland. The tie came against Alma, who the Big Reds would finish runner-up to at the 1992 state meet.
The Big Reds took the first two SEC swimming titles in '91 and '92 and finished in the state top 10 all four years of the seniors' careers. Four Big Reds would go on to swim at the NCAA Division I level.
The seniors on the1996 girls' team finished their career having finished in the state top 15 all four years and with an undefeated dual meet record, having won more than 50 meets in a row. They also never failed to win the SEC championship, winning the league crown all four years of their career. A number of members of this team also went on to swim on the Division I level.
