Judging by the early results, the work is paying off.
The Big Reds thumped Riverview 122-59 at home last Thursday, dominating what is currently the only Huron League opponent on the Milan schedule. Milan and Riverview are the only Huron schools with boys' swim programs.
"I told them this was going to be our de facto league meet," coach Dan Heikka said. "The guys came out fired up and wanted to show what they could accomplish after the training we had done. I was really impressed with their attitude."
Milan won every event in Thursday's meet, with a number of swimmers recording personal and season bests.
Ryan Bordine won both the 50-yard freestyle and 100 freestyle, with the 50 freestyle win coming in a state-cut time of 22.09. Bordine also anchored the 200 freestyle relay, joining Tim Hochradel, Ian Pendelton and Kray Cornelison in finishing in 1:35.55, which was good for first and fewer than two seconds off the state time.
Perhaps the Big Reds' most impressive performances came in what Heikka called "true Milan fashion in the 500 freestyle. Winner Zack Olsen's time of 5:26.36 was a whopping 30 seconds off his previous best and runner-up Jason Schroeder's time of 5:29.72 was likewise well under his personal best.
Another solid performer during the meet was sophomore Cornelison, who in addition to swimming in the 200 freestyle relay and first-place 400 freestyle relay (along with Hochradel, Schroeder and Pendleton) shaved two seconds off his personal best to finish third in the 100 freestyle.
His older brother Kyle Cornelison, a senior, won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.21. Both Cornelsions swam the 200 medley relay alongside Bordine and junior John Nuckels, winning in a time of 1:54.86.
Pendleton won two individual events in addition to the relay wins, finishing first in the 200 individual medley (2:13.38) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.06).
"This was our first chance to swim fast (after the break), and it really showed. We had dramatic improvement," Heikka said. "It's understood that in a lot of avenues for us, this is a rebuilding year. But by no means are we at the bottom.
"We're still something to be reckoned with and we showed that. This team has so much energy and passion, and they bring that to practice every day."
After a home meet against Tecumseh Tuesday night, which concluded after The News-Leader's press deadline, Milan's next meet will be held Jan. 23 at Chelsea.
