It came down to the final frame.

Boys' varsity bowler Dave McPherson needed to deliver two strikes in the 10th to secure a stunning upset of the Chelsea Bulldogs, a state-ranked team last year and one that that had handedly defeated Milan twice in the Big Reds inaugural season.

McPherson came through and became a hero.

"It was a very exciting game," said second-year coach Melanie Wilson. "The guys were very excited, especially at Chelsea's house. They all did well that match."

Rocky Garcia bowled a 190 for a high game.

The varsity girls' and the junior varsity boys' teams didn't fair as well. The girls lost 30-0 and the JV team fell 25-5.

Brittanie Divert had a high game with a 127 and Joel Michalak bowled a high of 131 for the JV squad.

The varsity boys followed up their dramatic upset over Chelsea with a 28-2 win over Morenci Monday. Jacob Varney bowled a 182, edging out McPherson for a high game by two points.

The win over Chelsea was a shot of confidence for the fledgling Big Reds bowling team, Wilson said.

The two wins for the varsity boys raise their overall record to 3-3.

Milan won one match all of last year, its first year competing.

"We've already done a lot better than last year and we're not even half way done yet," Wilson said.
