The competition is sponsored by the Michigan Center for Civic Education, and it's funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
Twelve schools participated in the event at the Lansing Center.
Before the regional competition, the class was split into six groups, and each had five students in it. The groups were each assigned a unit of the "We the People" textbook. The same people remained in each group for the state competition.
The preparation for this competition included a total of 14 hours of practice sessions. These practice sessions were outside of school, including time during winter break.
The preparation included writing three presentations and practicing follow-up questions, which are asked after the presentation. The students weren't able to practice answering the exact questions because they didn't know the questions in advance.
At the competition, each group had two presentations that they had to present to various judges.
The presentations were all judged by attorneys, judges, teachers and specialists.
Milan did very well at the competition, but didn't make it in the top three. Even though Milan didn't place, all students received a certificate for participating.
East Grand Rapids grabbed first place, East Kentwood took second place and Howell placed third in the competition.
The national competition will be held May 5 in Washington, D.C.
Michigan typically places at least 10th in the national competition.
Even though the preparation was, at times, inconvenient, it was a good learning experience for all of the students.
