Property Damage

Milan police investigated malicious destruction of property Jan. 6 at an apartment on Canfield Street. Officers made contact with the owner of a vehicle whose driver's-side window had been smashed out in the apartment complex's parking lot.
The man told police that an ex-girlfriend had been calling and threatening to "beat up" his current girlfriend. That morning, the former girlfriend had arrived at the apartment door, demanding that the current girlfriend come outside to fight. The man argued through the door with her and she left the building, he said.
The current girlfriend corroborated the boyfriend's statements and said she had been on the apartment balcony when she saw the woman break out the window with an unknown object.
An officer received the suspect's cell phone number from the complainants and spoke to her. After the vehicle was mentioned, the woman denied having any involvement "with that," although the officer had yet to mention the specific damage to the vehicle.
The officer asked the woman to come to the police department for an interview. She initially refused, then agreed to a time later that day, but didn't show up for the interview or answer her phone. The case remains open.
Illegal Use of Credit Card
A Milan woman told police Jan. 4 that her daughter had taken her debit card Jan. 2 and used it to make a withdrawal from her bank account at the Kroger store in Milan.
The woman told police that she and her daughter were celebrating a granddaughter's birthday when she left for the post office around 11 a.m. The purse containing the card, she said, was unattended.
The woman noticed the withdrawal two days later and contacted police. The account is shared with the woman's sister and because the card doubled as a credit card, it did not require a PIN for the transaction.
Police viewed surveillance video from Kroger and a copy of her receipt, confirming that she had purchased a jar of mayonnaise and a gift card.
The officer then made contact with the daughter, interviewing her at her residence, where the alleged theft of the card took place. The daughter told police that she had been asked by her mother to make the purchases, so the mother could then trade the gift card to a second daughter for marijuana.
The daughter said the transaction took place shortly thereafter and that the two of them smoked drugs at the residence that day. The daughter claimed her mother had filed the report to cover the fact that the money had been used for drugs, which would anger the mother's sister, who shares the account. The case remains open.
Larceny
An officer was dispatched to a location on West Michigan Avenue near North Street Dec. 31 to investigate a report of larceny from a motor vehicle. The officer spoke to a couple who parked their car there at 5:30 p.m. before attending church.
At 6:30 p.m., they found rear window smashed out and the wife's purse stolen. Compiled by Staff Writer Jerry Hinnen based on reports filed with the Milan Police Department.
