After completing a rigorous training schedule over the holiday break, the Big Reds competed in the Tecumseh Invitational last Saturday. Although the seven-team meet was intended as more of a non-competitive kickoff to the remainder of the season, Milan coach Dan Heikka was pleased with how his team swam.
"I was happy with how we did," he said. "Many had lifetime best and our relays swam particularly well. We had some people swim slightly different events and everyone did well."
The good news for Milan is that the fast times from Tecumseh should drop precipitously in the next few weeks as the weariness from the holiday training wears off. Heikka said the team held two practices every day of the school's winter break, except Christmas, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
After the team shrugs off the weariness form those training sessions, the Big Reds should be ready for big things over the next two months.
"It's a real commitment, giving up their Christmas break," Heikka said, "but over the next couple of weeks, they're going to get a lot faster. I'm excited."
But before that happens, Milan had to swim in Tecumseh. The meet was divided into freshman-sophomore (9-10) and junior-senior (11-12) divisions, with no team scores kept. Results included:
In diving, 9-10, Cody Baron, second. In 11-12, Cody Schmitt was fifth and Kyle Baron, sixth.
