The picture of Caswell School in Cone ("Past Tense: Smith makes a life in Milan," Dec. 20) was probably taken in about 1905. I know because some of the children are Autens and are related to my mother, Lillian Marion Auten.
One of the children, Nellie Hazel Auten, was born in 1900. Her parents were Alanson and Harriet Auten. The teacher, Myrtle Auten, was born in 1883. Myrtle's parents were J.M. and Elizabeth Auten.
I grew up within about five miles of the Caswell School.

Make sure turf wars not harming service
We would like to commend Carol Warshefski of Dexter for her brave and insightful letter ("HVA monopoly not good for residents," Dec. 20) to the editor of this paper regarding the emergency medical services situation in Washtenaw County. As the small prospective ambulance company mentioned in the letter, we share Ms. Warshefski's sentiments.
We personally have been contacted by members of many fire departments who have offered their support and shared their frustrations.
Washtenaw County is privileged to have so many fire departments and firefighters of the highest caliber. Many people don't realize that today's firefighter is typically also a highly trained EMS professional. Most people also don't realize that in a life or death medical emergency, the fire department is usually first on the scene.
However, fire departments in Washtenaw County have lost their right to transport patients. They must wait for an HVA ambulance. HVA's personnel are without question competent EMS providers. But there are many other qualified providers who have their hands tied.
Every public safety official -- EMS, fire and police -- should have the same goal in a medical crisis: compassionate and efficient life saving.
We ask our fellow citizens of Washtenaw County to support all public safety officials from every agency in our efforts to help each other. Please look at your own township or city and ensure that politics and turf issues are not preventing your fire department from transporting your family member in a time-sensitive medical crisis.
