Bringing people together who want to make Milan a stronger and more vibrant place to live and do business is the goal of many clubs and associations in and around the city. One new organization is hoping to help coordinate the good work being done by these many groups into a clearinghouse for communication and support.

Milan Unites was formed last April by local businesswoman Christine Mann and members of the Milan Area Chamber of Commerce. The purpose of the group was to bring together the businesses, community organizations, churches and nonprofits in an effort to share ideas and coordinate events.
The group meets 6 p.m. Thursday at Peoples Presbyterian Church, 210 Smith St., in Milan. Bonnie Miles from the Ann Arbor Convention and Visitors Bureau will be the guest speaker, sharing proven tips for non-profits and associations who want to work together for a united front.
The group's first meeting was in April 2008 and the group plans to meet quarterly at a different venue.
"We have met previously at the community center, but we thought it would be nice if the organizations in Milan Unite would take turns hosting meetings," said Mann, who also serves as the chamber's president.
Before launching Milan Unites, Mann met with Milan Mayor Kym Muckler.
"I thought her idea was visionary, and I'm very happy to see she's been able to get it off the ground," said Muckler. "I do think it will help the city a great deal. It will enhance communication, strengthen relationships between organizations, and create new relationships between different people from different groups who struggle with varying challenges."
Mann believes there are many groups in Milan that are doing great things and often people are not aware of the opportunities available.
"Milan Unites provides a place where groups can share information about their organizations in general, as well as information on their upcoming events," Mann said.
She chose Miles as the program's first guest speaker after attending a meeting of the Ann Arbor Convention and Tourism Board and hearing about all it does to promote events and businesses in the area.
"I think it's important for Milanites to know that this valuable resource is out there."
