Milan hits double-digit wins

Big Reds pick up pair of victories in surprise home tournament

By Brian Cox, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: January 4, 2007

The Milan varsity wrestling team went 2-3 at the Trenton Team Invitational on Friday, running into a buzzsaw in Livonia Franklin, which accounted for two of the Big Reds losses.

It was the Trenton Team Invitational, but it was held at Milan High School after Trenton reported a loss of power. Trenton then failed to show up for its own invitational, which went on without them.

"We were fortunate that the schools were able to come here," said coach Gary Jonseck, "otherwise, we would have lost the day and wouldn't have been able to make it up."

Jonseck is eager for his wrestlers to get as many matches under their belts as possible during the run-up to the second week of February when the Huron League meet kicks off the postseason.

That requires wrestling at every opportunity, including over the holiday break.

"It has been my experience that if you don't compete over the holidays, you can't reach the peak you want to in February," Jonseck said.

He is also committed to getting his wrestlers in front of the highest competition he can find.

The Big Reds found it at the Trenton meet.

"We got the competition we were looking for," said Jonseck. "We wanted to see some good competition over the holidays and we did. Livonia Franklin brought some good leg attacks we needed to see."

Milan steamrolled South Sandusky 69-3 to open the tournament, but then went up against Livonia Franklin's "A" team and fell hard 54-6. The Big Reds kept it closer against Livonia Franklin's "B" team, losing 47-21 and went on to defeat Annapolis 45-34 before losing a tight match 38-27 to league rival Monroe Jefferson.

"We'll get another shot at Jefferson in two weeks," Jonseck said. "We got to see some things in their lineup and they got to see things on ours."

Milan wrestlers going 4-1 on the day were Josh Pegouskie (189) and Jayme Gruber (140).

The Big Reds now have four wrestlers with more than 10 wins, including Pegouskie (14-4), Dan Vivian (14-4), Jacob Nelson (12-6) and David Box (13-5). Six wrestlers are on the cusp of breaking 10 wins, including Jayme Gruber (9-4), Jarryd Gotts (9-7), Isaac Smith (9-7), Aaris Gruber (9-9), Sean Domas (9-9) and Cody O'Keefe (9-9).

Milan's dual record is 10-8. The Big Reds next compete in a quad meet 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Milan High School before competing in the Monroe County Sheriff's Invitational Saturday.

Some 155 wrestlers from 14 schools competed at the Milan JV Invitational last Thursday. Placing first for Milan was Ben Snider at 189. Taking second place honors were Nakona Anderson (125) and David Wilson (130). Placing third were Josh Ford (130) and Travis Turk (135), Warren Losee (215) and Kyle Latta (285). Ryan Hasten (160) placed fourth.
