Twenty-four also happens to be the number of hours that Milan High School senior Carolyn Nelson spends each week on her passion, which is volleyball.
And that was before the season started.
"I seriously just love the game," Nelson said.
It's an understatement to say she is just dedicated to volleyball. Nelson embodies the athleticism of the sport. Named a volleyball starter during her freshman year of high school, she has remained a starter for the Big Reds the last four years and served as captain for two years.
Moreover, she is a member of the Michigan Juniors premier volleyball team, which is considered one of the best club volleyball teams in the Midwest. The Michigan Juniors team travels across the nation, competing at tournaments in Baltimore, Orlando, Houston, Chicago and other major American cities.
As a result of her athletic talent, Divisions I, II and III colleges having been calling her about playing for them after she graduates.
While volleyball is her passion, Nelson has other interests that make her one of the school's rising stars. She is academically gifted, finishing first in her class last semester –– a feat she hopes to carry on to graduation.
"I've always dreamed of being valedictorian," she said.
With one of the highest grade point averages –– 4.1 on a 4.0 scale –– at Milan High School, she is known as a hard worker and dedicated student. She has taken Advanced Placement classes, demonstrating an ability to make the grade in college-level courses.
Nelson also finds time for other interests. She is president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, something in which she said she believes strongly, participating in three mission trips at her church.
As for her future, Nelson is interested in pursuing a degree in nursing while also continuing her passion for volleyball. She is considering Calvin College, Hope College, Cedarville College and several universities.
"I just want to help people," she said.
Her dream is to join a MedFlight air ambulance program.
