Grant purchases new texts for students in English night class

Thirty-five students in the night school English class offered through Milan Community Education now have proper textbooks, thanks to a grant from the Greater Milan Area Community Foundation.

Instructor Sandy Theisen had been photocopying exercises and patching together lessons with old books and materials before the new books arrived last week.
"This is wonderful. These young adults want to be here and deserve proper materials," said Theisen, a newcomer to Milan teaching for her first year with the Community Education program.
Connie Cox and Cathy Redies, coordinators for Milan Adult and Community Education, attended the awards ceremony Sept. 13, where the foundation granted $30,000 to projects and nonprofit groups in the Milan area.
"We are thrilled to be getting these funds. The adults in our program have been working with second-hand materials for years and this will be a boost," Cox said.
Students in Theisen's English class study composition, poetry and fiction. The new text, "Stack the Deck," is a program with step-by-step exercises to improve writing skills.
The Milan Adult and Community Education department operates an adult basic education program, high school completion classes and general educational development, or GED, preparation. Classes are held at Milan Middle School in the evenings.
The program offers guidance to anyone interested in obtaining a high school diploma.
"Most people are closer to a diploma than they think. We can let them know how fast they can obtain the diploma and explain how life experience credits can be applied," Cox said.
The next semester of classes begins Jan. 17, 2008.
Milan Community Education also offers enrichment classes Mil-n area residents. Courses include after-school classes, cheer clinics, craft workshops and more.
Residents with special skills wishing to teach a course or workshop are encouraged to call the office to discuss organizing a class for the upcoming semester.
